Gratitude can concern a benefit received, a harm that did not occur, or the conditions that make one's own assumptions examinable. We develop the proposal that appreciating these conditions can orient practice toward realizing emptiness: examining how distinctions arise, relinquishing their assumed intrinsic necessity, and retaining their conditional usefulness. The argument distinguishes an observed absence, a missing observation, counterfactual valuation and non-reification, and places their differences in dialogue with explicitly situated philosophical and scriptural sources. We reconstruct Fisher, Sandved Smith and Hohwy's gratitude and gaze notebooks, then separate faithful reconstruction from corrected experiments and new mechanisms. GNN-declared paired recall experiments use 5120 independent agent-world units, matched environmental exposure and replay dose, normalized likelihoods, and independent predictive assessment. Pinned Realizing Emptiness interfaces supply structural admission and finite mathematical comparators. An enacted inquiry model separates appreciation, costly activity, access to alternatives and evidence-responsive retention or revision; explicit learning-to-gaze and joint scene/encoding experiments examine transfer and identifiability. Exact count enumeration, mathematical nulls, paired controls and joint bootstrap inference make the resulting software claims independently checkable.
Selective positive recall reduces the declared optimism summary, while its predictive consequences depend on the world mixture and the specified transfer bridge. Counterfactual absence valuation preserves inference by construction. Accessible inquiry can revise a contradicted restriction and retain a useful one; activity without access instead incurs costs while preserving rigid forecasts. Exact analysis exposes rare adverse selections absent from seeded realizations. The original gaze code reproduces the pre-intervention occupancy but contains no implemented after intervention. Our active-scene extension finds a context-dependent access advantage without an additional inquiry-specific predictive advantage. Joint scene/encoding inquiry distinguishes learning an encoding from combining it with scene evidence: observationally equivalent labels remain unidentifiable, and excluded hypotheses cannot be recovered. Known-answer fixtures also retain skew-related undercoverage and unavailable rare-event estimates rather than treating replication size as a remedy for every inferential failure. The contribution is a reproducible account of enabling operations and their limits, together with a falsifiable human research program that separates inquiry value from patience, anticipated good news and instrumental information demand. Synthetic model results establish neither human gratitude nor contemplative realization or clinical benefit.
