DNA Recombination is key to many crucial biological processes. Recombination between chromosomes during sex cell production (meiosis) creates novel combinations of genes, and to many, is the "Why?" of Sex. Recombination between versions of the same gene (alleles) allows a kaleidoscope of DNA error-correcting mechanisms to proceed, and occurs countless times each second in your body. Recombination during immune cell differentiation allows the body to recognize an essentially infinite cohort of potential invaders. And now that recombination has been mechanistically deconvoluted, derived technologies facilitate DNA editing in both laboratory and in vivo settings.
